2 simple ideas of language development for toddlers

buy generic Ivermectin Up, down, in, out, under, over… Those relational prepositions mean something very specific to us as adults.  But when toddlers hear a phrase like, “Put the block under the cup,” they’ll probably put the block can i buy Pregabalin at walmart in the cup, because it’s the obvious thing to do. Toddlers understand that they are supposed to do something with the block and the cup, but just what all those relationships are, and what they’re called, can take years to master. Typically, toddlers tune in to the words they know, like “block” and “cup”—and then make a good guess about what you’ve got in mind with the rest.

Language development, like all other developmental domains, is a process which can be nurtured in surprisingly simple, everyday interactions and activities.  Here are two ideas that will help support children’s vocabulary development:

#1 – Label and move.

There is a powerful connection between movement and learning that has an impact on language development too.  That’s because a child’s developing brain makes a connection based on what they experience.  The more you label the movements, the more your child will understand and be able to make the connection between the word and the movement or object.  Here’s a great example of moving and labeling:

#2 – Practice and play.

Learning should be fun!  And here at Kindermusik, we like to make it hands-on, interactive, and engaging, particularly with our @Home Materials.  Here’s a playful way to help your child with their vocabulary development:

Kindermusik and Alexander technique: common points for success

F.M. Alexander, the founder of Alexander technique, was born in Tasmania in 1869, he lived in Australia, in the UK and in the US and improved many peoples’ lives across the globe, including famous actors, singers, etc., by teaching them how to move correctly, how to eliminate ineffective strain in movement habits. Those habits sit in us so deeply that we take them for granted.

So where is there a connection with Kindermusik, you may wonder? In fact, there is a deep underlying resemblance present between Kindermusik and Alexander’s principles. First of all, movement is the dominant category for both of them. Exploration through movement as well as freedom of movement and self-expression are the key factors of Kindermusik experience and so for Alexander’s technique. And of course, these methods are meant to bring happier and healthier lifestyles.

There are a lot of opportunities for the kids to move during Kindermusik lesson, whether it is a free dance, a circle dance, a creative movement, pretend play, even a song (!) or instrument exploration.

For me, as a Kindermusik teacher, it is an absolute joy to see how natural kids’ movements are, how flowing their dances are and with what ease they can perform it in class, in a familiarity of the classroom environment.

“The poise and freedom of movement shown by children is a natural ability often lost as they become older” p.208 “Secrets of Alexander Technique” by Robert MacDonald and Caro Ness.

Children naturally express zest for living through movement and in Kindermusik class we take care about it and aim to preserve it for their lifetime.

If you look at the way a three year old moves, you may notice her neck is straight and relaxed (not tilted back/forwards) and her head sits perfectly facing in front of her (not upwards/downwards), her back is naturally straight, no over-tightening, no slumping, and the front of the body is relaxed, as well. “Head-neck-back” position is the main point of interest in Alexander’s technique. It is very common that a lot of human’s problems are related to tensions in that area and to poor posture. Have you observed the way your young child moves? It can be a good idea to learn from our own kids how to move correctly in order to re-discover their ease of movement and freedom that we need sometimes. Did we mention, Kindermusik classes arre equally fun for kids and their parents?

Raising more self-aware children with Kindermusik

In Kindermusik class we focus on the child’s individual needs and abilities. That means each child is recognised and accepted unconditionally, regardless his academic success or anything like that. However, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate their milestones in a more appropriate way – by individually recognising his or her merits. That makes our classes process, not perfprmance based.

Self-awareness is an integral part of Kindermusik program. As if we can “listen” and “hear” what our body says we are on the way of using it correctly and efficiently. Activities that involve using particular body parts consciously, moving in certain patterns – help develop that sense of “listening to your body”. Self-awareness is actually a fundamental thing that holds the key for conscious understanding of one’s inner world, thoughts, physical sensations and intuition.  In addition to movement, in our Kindermusik classes we assist with the development of self-awareness by making sure that each child’s contribution is valued, any idea is appreciated and any opinion is accepted.

What else is there to grow a more self-aware child? Actually there are many games that we use during our classes that focus on “inhibitory” control and they are amongst kids’s favourites. So-called “stop-and-go” games help children develop their inner commands for the situations when they need to stop for instance and think and then resume or start new action. This is actually a vital life skill, manifestations of which could be useful in everyday life situations – like stopping in front of a car or other hazards as well as stopping and thinking in situations related to a bad habit. We hope that these games will help Kindermusik kids make healthier choices later on.

Our quiet time (read “quiet music time”) in baby, toddler and sometimes, in older Kindermusik classes, teaches little ones to relax and to listen to their bodies and minds while they are actually listening to the music. They also learn how to re-establish contact with themselves and to re-focus on their own inner sensations and how to be more self-aware, as well. Relaxation is a learnt behaviour and perhaps the first step to learning self-awareness in a child.

It is obvious that child’s learning takes time and actually is an infinite process. It is very important, especially during first few crucial years of child’s life to maintain that process alive as well as corroborate it with parent’s behaviour and examples. Typical Kindermusik family is provided with great tools to facilitate that process  as their child is growing: in class tips are shared by trained Kindermusik expert as well as outside of the classroom there are Kindermusik@home materials full of developmentally appropriate activities and parental tips which are available to you 24/7 on any device connected to the Internet. There is so much you can do outside the class time to help your child and yourself. All you need to do is to observe your child and learn from each other. She gets to learn your life experience and skills while you can  learn her freedom of movement and spontaneity of self-expression. Kindermusik  encourages you to support this learning by all means for the future success in your child’s life.

What do kids do differently to us?

Many of us deal with kids a lot on a daily basis and the variety of situations we get into makes us wonder at some point…how is that possible? Where do kids get all that energy needed for all the running, playing, making stories and lots of other tricks they demonstrate to us? And how should we get the emotional strength and physical agility to cope with the children, provide quality parenting as well as combine it with a healthy lifestyle and preserve own sanity?..

Young children, especially those who have not been yet affected by the pressure of social boundaries such as school, family and external social environment – move freely, with ease and very spontaneously. You can see it at a Kindermusik class during activities like dances (especially those with elements of free dances), creative movement or playing instruments to the music. Unfortunately, grown-ups sometimes cannot be like that. Moving as freely and efficiently as we should is often hard for adults, because their actions seem to be rigid, bodies appear to be under unnecessary tension or stress.

Beyond Kindermusik classrooms, we may put way too much effort in order to get the results we want. And what is the most frightening – it might be our habit. And we do not mean big things like working hard over time to reach your goal…no, we mean simple everyday things that involve wasting our energy on “over-reacting”, “over-tightening” and “fight” reactions to outer stimuli are often exaggerated  and beyond our control. It may be the case that many of us have formed our everyday habits like sitting, standing, driving, working like that. Here is the answer why kids appear to handle everyday activities with ease: adults do things with too much tension, e.g. unnecessary waste of energy, while children have not learned those vicious patters yet.

Come to one of our Kindermusik session filled with plenty of quality original age-appropriate music, including songs, games and other enriching activities to help you with the total development of your child. Needless to say, our classes allow you to relax while you play with your child in a friendly atmosphere of acceptance, understanding and acknowledgement. Besides that, you will get many opportunities to observe the way your child moves as well as see others in a similar situation as you. The wonderful thing is that you can learn from each other, too!
